Perched in one of the city’s most charming squares, this hotel is footsteps away from the Ribeira waterfront, and all this bustling area has to offer.
What really won us over was the hotel breakfast and coffee area. It’s the perfect spot to relax and recharge before heading out for another day of sightseeing.

Porto is a great place to explore with your better half. Every corner turned reveals something new, from majestic bridges to quaint churches and picturesque promenades. But there are a few must-dos that stand out for turning up the heat on your romantic holiday.

Day 1 – Explore, Go Wine Tasting, & Watch the Sunset
Explore Porto’s Old Town
Start off your day in Porto’s Old Town. Also known as Ribeira, this is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the city’s most enchanting areas.
You and your partner can pick up a morning coffee at one of the many charming cafes and walk hand in hand through narrow alleys that open up into scenic squares, each more charming than the last. The colorful buildings, adorned with traditional azulejos (ceramic tiles), create a vibrant and romantic setting for a leisurely stroll. There are plenty of charming boutiques and wine bars to explore!
The heart of Porto is also full of historic landmarks that make up the city’s unique skyline. Pay a visit to the Clérigos Tower, a baroque bell tower that stands 76 meters tall. It’s the tallest building in Porto and offers stunning views of the city. Sé Cathedral and the Church of São Francisco are two other must-visit landmarks in the Old Town. The cathedral’s Gothic structure and the church’s intricate Baroque interior will leave you and your partner in awe.
Insider tip: One of our favorite spots during our visit was Palacio da Bolsa, the former stock exchange building that boasts stunning neoclassical and Moorish architecture.
Go Wine Tasting
You can’t talk about Portuguese history without mentioning Port wine. It would be an actual crime to visit Porto and not indulge in some wine tasting!
After your morning exploration, cross the Dom Luís I Bridge to Vila Nova de Gaia, where you’ll find numerous port houses offering affordable educational tours and tastings. This is an absolute MUST when visiting Porto.
In Gaia, you and your partner will learn about the history and production of Port wine while savoring its distinct flavors. We highly recommend having a sip of Vino Verde, a wine signature in their area. It’s white with a light effervescence that is so fascinating to learn about.
Another wine option is the great Douro Valley. This region, known for its terraced vineyards and stunning scenery, is the birthplace of Port wine. You can take a river cruise, hike, or bike through the vineyards and, of course, indulge in some wine tastings at local wineries.

Find the Perfect Sunset Spot
Sunsets in Porto are nothing short of spectacular. So what better way to end your day than with a romantic backdrop? The city’s unique landscape provides numerous vantage points to watch the sun dip below the horizon.

- Miradouro da Vitória: This lesser-known viewpoint offers panoramic views of Porto’s rooftops and the Douro River. It’s a quiet spot, perfect for a romantic moment away from the crowds. Climb up, pack a picnic and some wine, and enjoy a peaceful sunset together.
- Jardim do Morro: Located across the river in Vila Nova de Gaia, this garden offers some of the best sunset views in Porto. Take the cable car or a short walk across the Dom Luís I Bridge to reach this charming park. Watch as the sun sets over Porto’s iconic landmarks and enjoy a romantic evening in nature.
- Serra do Pilar Monastery: For a truly breathtaking view, head to the Serra do Pilar Monastery. The vantage point from here provides a sweeping panorama of Porto, especially beautiful at sunset. It’s the perfect spot to watch the sky turn shades of pink, orange, and purple as the day comes to an end.

The rooms we’re beautifully decorated and felt relaxing. Plus, we had a fantastic front-row seat to the Independence Day concert and fireworks in the town square.
Day 2 – Set Off on a Day Trip, Chill Out in the Square, & Have a Romantic Dinner
Try Ginja in Obidos
Wake up early and head to Obidos! While Obidos is definitely a tourist trap, this darling town will win over your heart. We had such a great time walking around and taking in the sights. We climbed the castle walls and even indulged in a Ginja liquor tasting, served in tiny chocolate cups with cherries inside. It was such a fun experience!
Every bus in Porto stops in Obidos, making it an easy two-hour drive. We hired a driver through Day Trip for a more personalized experience, and it was totally worth it. Our driver, Lisa, was perfect, and her car was roomy and accommodating.
Before you arrive, be prepared for crowds in the main area and lots of touristy shops. You can spend a good half of the day here, and make sure you check out the local bookstore — it’s a book lover’s dream!

Relax in Charming Squares
After the delightful chaos of Obidos, take a bit of time to slow down and relax in one of the many charming squares scattered throughout the Old Town. Praça da Ribeira, located right on the waterfront, is a great place to sit back, people-watch, and take in the lovely views of the Douro River.
If you’re lucky, there are street performers and musicians to entertain you as you sit side by side with your beau. If you’re into music at all, you must seek out live Fado music. It’s essentially Portuguese blues, and it’s incredible!

- Raiz: For traditional and contemporary fusion, Raiz is your spot. It was, without a doubt, our favorite meal in Porto. The dishes were creative yet still very Portuguese, and the service was exceptional.
- Cumplice Steakhouse: We highly recommend their “Pork Floyd” dish. It was so delish!
- Alibi: Rooftop dining with incredible views. It’s tucked away in the heart of Porto with a diverse menu and stunning views of the city.
- Mille Pinsa Trattoria Romana: If you’ve overdone it on Portuguese food, this is your spot! We recommend the gluten-free pizza, shrimp risotto, and pasta bolognese.
- Slice of Porto: The best pizza in town. It’s got that perfect crust-to-cheese and sauce ratio. What can I say, it’s chef’s kiss!
- Miss Pavlova: For the absolute fluffiest pavlova you’ve ever had. Trust me, it’s worth every calorie! And for the most legendary libations, Curioso Cocktail Bar is where it’s at.

We recommend hiring a driver. Daytrip.com is a great website for booking private transfers between cities. Our driver was Lisa S., and the car was roomy and accommodating. She was perfect and got us in and out of places with ample time. You can even book stops along the way! It’s a quick and scenic three-hour drive that you’ll definitely enjoy!
Is Porto a walkable city?
Walking: Porto is a very walkable city, with many main sights and attractions in the historic center. Walking is the best way to explore the city and take in the sights and sounds of the local neighborhoods.
How many days in Porto is enough?
Three days will allow you to explore the city at a more leisurely pace, as well as provide time to visit the museums and lesser-known sights. If you are new to Porto, it is suggested to plan two days in which to fully see the city.
What is the best month to visit Porto?
The best season to visit Porto is late spring (May/June) or early autumn (September). There are fewer tourists in the city, but the weather is still glorious!
Is Porto expensive?
