Compared to your standard ocean cruises, a European river cruise offers a unique experience with smaller ships, intimate settings, and scenic views of charming villages and landscapes. You and your love will spend your time exploring more off-the-beaten-path destinations and experiencing the local culture up close.

But, with so many river cruises to choose from, how can first-time cruisers even decide on which one to embark on? Well, let us make the decision easy for you — CroisiCruise is a must-go for any first cruising experience… especially for people in love.

Preparing for Your River Cruise

As a river cruise newbie, it’s important to make sure you are fully prepared for your trip. You’ll need to choose from a long list of river cruise ships, pick the right place for the right time of year, decide what type of cabin to book, and pack specific to the destination and activities you have planned.

To pick the best river cruise for first timers, let’s break it down into sections and go through some key things to consider before setting sail.

Choosing the Right Cruise

Since we’re talking about CroisiCruise, you’re already off to a great start! But for those of you who may be considering other river cruise lines, it’s important to do your research on the following:

  • Time of year: Do you want to avoid peak season, or are you fine with more people around? Some cruises may only operate during certain times of the year, so make sure you check availability for your desired travel dates.
  • Trip length: River cruises can range from a few days to several weeks, so decide how much time you have available and plan accordingly.
  • Destination: The Douro isn’t the only river that offers scenic cruises. Other popular destinations include the Danube, Rhine, Seine, and Volga.
  • Itinerary: Look at the planned stops and excursions offered on each cruise to make sure they align with your interests. Some companies focus on luxury and fine dining, while others may cater to a more active crowd with on-board fitness classes and excursions.

How to Book

Once you’ve decided on a specific river cruise line and itinerary, it’s time for you and your boo to book your trip! Most companies offer online booking, but you can also call or visit a travel agent for assistance.

When booking your best first time river cruise, keep these tips in mind:

  • Book in advance: River cruises tend to sell out quickly, so it’s best to book at least 6-12 months in advance to ensure availability.
  • Consider packages: Some cruise lines offer package deals and tailor-made offers that include airfare, transfers, and pre/post-cruise accommodations. This can save you lots of time and money in the long run!
  • Look for promotions: Look for special promotions and discounts offered by cruise lines. They may offer reduced rates or free upgrades, making your trip even more affordable.
  • Gather documentation: Before booking your trip, make sure you have all necessary documentation, such as passports and visas. Some countries may have specific entry requirements, so research and plan accordingly.

What to Pack for Your River Cruise

Packing for a river cruise holiday on CroisiCruise is a bit different from packing for Ocean cruises. You’ll want to pack light, as cruise cabins tend to be smaller and have limited closet space. You’ll also want to bring clothing specific to the excursions and amenities offered on your river cruise.

Some essential items to pack include:

  • Comfortable shoes: We recommend ones with a non-slip sole for wet or uneven terrain.
  • Layers: The weather can vary on a river cruise, so it’s best to pack light layers that you can easily put on or take off as needed. This includes a warm sweater or fleece jacket.
  • Formal attire: CroisiCruise had an overall more casual feel, and the dress code reflected that. There was never a black tie moment, but there was a celebratory night when people were encouraged to dress up.
  • Swimwear: Some river cruise ships have pools and hot tubs on board, so don’t forget your swimwear if you plan on taking a dip!
  • Sun protection: Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat are all important items to pack, especially if you’ll be spending time on the top deck during sunny days.
  • Rain gear: Depending on your destination, you may encounter rain during your river cruise. Be prepared with a small umbrella, rain poncho, or raincoat.
  • First aid kit: While your river cruise ship will have its own first aid kit, it’s always a good idea to bring some basic essentials plus any personal medication you may need.

Learn About Your Cruise’s Demographics

When we set foot on our Douro River CroisiEurope cruise, we immediately noticed many of the passengers were speaking French. This was because CroisiEurope is a French company, and many of its tours cater to French-speaking travelers.

Even so, it didn’t negatively impact our experience at all. We still had English-speaking guides for excursions and English menus on board. Plus, it was a delight to share some cultural exchange with our fellow passengers and learn about their culture and experiences. If you plan on booking the same cruise as we did, I highly recommend learning some basic French phrases to enhance your interactions with other guests.

Depending on the cruise line or company you choose, you may encounter a certain demographic of travelers. Some river cruises cater to families, while others are more popular with couples or older adults. It’s always a good idea to do some research beforehand so you know what to expect and can plan accordingly.

On-Board the Cruise: What to Expect

A typical day on a CroisiEurope cruise starts with breakfast, usually served in a buffet style. After that, you and your love can join excursions or activities organized by the crew or simply relax on board and enjoy the scenic views. Lunch and dinner are also served, often with a variety of local dishes to try.

The quality of food on the CroisiCruise was really a highlight for my partner and I! We got to taste traditional French cuisine and local specialties from each region we visited. Some river cruises may have themed nights or special events on board, so be sure to check the itinerary beforehand. On our cruise, we had a Portuguese folk dance performance and a wine-tasting event. It was so lovely.

Most cruises also have onboard amenities such as a lounge/bar, a sundeck for relaxation, and sometimes even a spa or fitness center. This may vary depending on the size and type of cruise ship. No matter what corner of the ship you find yourself in, there will always be a friendly crew member ready to assist and make your experience as pleasant as possible!

River cruise itineraries are usually included in CroisiEurope’s overall package, but there may be other various destinations available for an additional cost.

It’s best for you and your partner to plan ahead and choose the excursions that appeal to you the most. You can sign up ahead of time and view the bus listings and each excursion’s physical activity level posted daily in the main reception area.

Note: Some excursions may require more walking or physical exertion, so be sure to consider your own abilities when selecting options. If you change your mind on an excursion, it’s super easy to swap it out for another choice.

Excursions are led by knowledgeable local guides, and bagged lunches and snacks are provided during full-day excursions so you can stay energized while exploring. Off port, you’ll mostly be able to get around on foot, but there may be opportunities to take a bike ride or shuttle bus to areas of interest or participate in guided tours.

What to Bring on River Cruise Excursions:

  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Layers for changing weather conditions
  • A small bag for essentials like sunscreen and water
  • An umbrella or rain jacket, depending on the weather forecast
  • Cash or credit cards for potential purchases at local markets or shops

Tips for First-Time River Cruisers

  • Make the most of it: Join as many activities and excursions as you can to make the most of your river cruise experience. It’s not often that you get to explore multiple cities and countries in such a unique way!
  • Get to know the crew: The cruise staff are there to make your trip enjoyable and memorable. Take the time to get to know them and ask for recommendations or tips on local activities.
  • Don’t forget about downtime: While it’s exciting to explore new places, don’t forget to take some time to relax and enjoy the amenities of the ship. Whether it’s lounging on the sundeck or indulging in a spa treatment, taking breaks from excursions can help rejuvenate you.
  • Prepare for seasickness: While river cruises are generally smooth, it’s always a good idea to bring medication or natural remedies in case you experience seasickness. Consult with your doctor before the trip for recommendations.
  • Utilize resources: Apps, websites, and guidebooks can all be helpful resources for planning your river cruise and learning about the destinations you’ll be visiting. We really liked using the River Cruise App, which provided information on daily activities and port information.
  • Consider cabin options: Some cabins have French balconies or private terraces, while some of CroisiCruis’s premium ships offer more space and amenities.
  • Plan for no Wi-Fi: We had literally no wifi on our cruise so make sure you have a good data plan or be prepared to unplug for a while!
  • Be aware of service charges: Some activities and services on board may come with additional fees. Make sure to budget for these expenses in advance.
  • Be respectful of the culture: As you visit different countries and interact with locals, remember to be respectful of their culture and customs. Familiarize yourself with the local customs (i.e. dress code, tipping norms, etc.) before arriving.

There are several key differences between a river cruise and an ocean cruise. For one, river cruises typically accommodate a smaller number of passengers, allowing for a more intimate and personalized experience.

River cruises also explore inland destinations, stopping in smaller towns and villages along the way, while ocean cruises tend to focus on larger, more well-known ports.
