History & Facts

Sedona, located in Northern Arizona, is a land of sacred significance, deeply rooted in Native American history and traditions. It’s the kind of place that draws people from all over the world, giving them a chance to soak in its rich heritage and amazing natural beauty. With its unique geology and lively arts scene, it’s the perfect romantic place to recharge, reconnect, and inspire.

Here are some cool facts and highlights from Sedona’s history:

  1. Sedona’s red rocks get their vibrant color from iron in the sandstone that’s been oxidizing for millions of years. Erosion has carved out the amazing formations we see today.
  2. The Sinagua were the first known people to live in Sedona. They built incredible stone pueblos and lived there until they mysteriously left around 1400 AD.
  3. In prehistoric times, Sedona was an important spot for ceremonies, where different Indigenous groups came together for spiritual and cultural rituals.
  4. Known for its spiritual energy, it is home to vortexes like Cathedral Rock and Bell Rock, believed to enhance meditation, healing, and personal growth.
  5. Sedona’s more recent history kicked off in the late 1800s when European settlers like JJ Thompson set up a homestead in Oak Creek Canyon.

When to Visit

The best time for a romantic weekend in Sedona is during the fall and spring, when the weather is mild and comfortable. The temperature during this time ranges from 60-80°F, making it perfect for outdoor activities like hiking, biking, and exploring.

Summer in Sedona means blazing heat, often in the 90s or higher, while winters are cooler, around 50°F. The snow on the red rocks is absolutely stunning, but it can definitely make hiking and sightseeing more challenging. The upside? Fewer crowds during these seasons mean a much more relaxed and peaceful visit!

The Inn at Laguna Beach

You know when you stumble on a place that just gets it? That’s exactly how I felt at Enchantment Resort.

This is easily one of my favorite all-inclusive experiences. Waking up to those insane red rock views from my private patio, with a crackling fireplace no less, was absolute bliss.

There’s so much to do here! You can kick back at the spa (they’ve got some amazing Southwestern-inspired treatments), play golf with a scenic backdrop, or explore some unique hiking trails. And if you’re into good food, they have nice dining options, including romantic outdoor meals under the stars. Talk about a great place to woo, wow, and escape the world together!

How to Get There

There are a couple of ways to get to Sedona. One option is to fly into Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport. If you’re up for it, you can spend some time exploring Phoenix before heading out. The drive to Sedona from there takes about 2 hours up the I-17, and there’s plenty to see along the way.

Or, if you want to get there faster, you can fly into Flagstaff Pulliam Airport, which is just a quick 40-minute drive to Sedona through scenic Oak Creek Canyon. Planning to visit the Grand Canyon? Start there and then make your way down to Sedona. Seriously, Oak Creek Canyon is one of the prettiest drives you’ll ever take!

Day 1:

If you’re in Sedona, you’ve got to start your day with a hike — it’s the best way to soak it all in! For something quick and easy, Fay Canyon is my favorite hidden gem. But if you and your partner are up for a challenge, Boynton Canyon Trail is totally worth it, as it offers some of the most breathtaking views.

After your hike, unwind and refuel at Coffee Pot Restaurant. This place has all your breakfast cravings covered, from a whopping 101 omelet options to eggs benedict, Belgian waffles, and Huevos Rancheros.

Now is a great time to hit the landmarks and tourist attractions nearby:

  • Amitabha Stupa & Peace Park: Start here for quiet reflection and spiritual vibes.
  • Chapel of the Holy Cross: Swing by next — this stunning chapel is an architectural marvel set within the red rocks.
  • Cathedral Rock: If you’re feeling up for it, take a hike around here, or just grab some awesome shots of those iconic red rocks.
  • Lovers’ Knoll: The easiest, most romantic viewpoint for photos. No hiking required!

For dinner, Dahl & Di Luca Ristorante Italiano is the place to go for a romantic and special meal. It’s been voted one of the top restaurants in Sedona for over 20 years, so you know it’s good! The atmosphere and food are impeccable.

Day 2:

Get an early start at the Pump House Station Urban Eatery & Market. This rustic-chic breakfast joint is a local favorite, and their food never disappoints.

Rent a UTV

One of the most classic Sedona adventures! Renting a UTV is such a fun way to sightsee, and driving one is an absolute blast. We booked with Arizona ATV Rental Adventures and couldn’t have been happier with the experience. There are lots of different trails to explore, from smooth scenic routes to more challenging terrain.

Insider tip: We recommend the half-day rental, which gives you plenty of time to take in the stunning landscapes while still getting your adrenaline fix.

Go shopping in Uptown

Once you’ve wrapped up your UTV adventure, head back to Uptown for some shopping and relaxation. It’s a great way to wind down and explore the local galleries, boutique shops, and artisan goods. You’ll find everything from handmade jewelry to one-of-a-kind artworks. The perfect way to take a piece of Sedona home with you!

While on the strip, visit Elote Cafe for authentic Mexican cuisine with stunning Red Rocks views. Don’t leave without trying their famous elote. It’s absolute heaven on a cob.

Day 3:

Take your last day to check out what’s up north of the city. Get breakfast at the Indian Gardens. Here, you can sip on some great coffee, dig into a breakfast burrito, and chill in a lush garden setting. If you’re lucky, there might even be live music!

Hike the North Wilson Trail

Once your belly is full, I highly recommend hiking the North Wilson Trail. I know Slide Rock State Park is right there, but during the warmer months it’s always packed with children. Don’t say I didn’t warn ya! The North Wilson Trail is a 2-4 hour hike with awesome canyon views and a few great swimming holes to cool off in along the way (and no screaming kids!).

Pamper Yourself with a spa treatment

You can’t visit Sedona without getting a spa treatment, and Gateway Cottage Wellness Center is my fav. Their couples massage is seriously next level, and with psychic readings and Reiki also on offer, you can knock out a bunch of spiritual to-dos in one go before heading out of Sedona.

Visit a vortex

The best is for last, and that’s visiting a vortex! The Sedona Airport Vortex offers 360° views of the red rock landscape and is known for its powerful energy. Take a quick hike up the Vortex (you literally just walk up some rocks), chill at one of the lookout points, and soak it all in.

Pro tip: Go at sunset — watching the red rocks glow as the sun sets is pure magic!

Can’t get enough of the scenery? Wrap up your weekend in Sedona with a romantic dinner at The Hudson. The food’s amazing, but the views steal the show!
