Why Lisbon is a Top Destination for Couples

When we think of romantic getaway destinations in Europe, we might think of the more stereotypical locations like Paris, Venice, or Santorini. While these are all wonderful places in their own right, Lisbon has its own allure that has been drawing in couples from all over the world.

Here’s why:

  • Less expensive compared to other European cities
  • Amazing weather, making it perfect for outdoor activities year-round
  • Stunning architecture and colorful buildings make for great photo ops
  • Rich and diverse history and cultural heritage to explore together
  • Delicious food and wine scene, perfect for romantic dinners
  • Charming and cozy neighborhoods, perfect for strolling hand in hand

The list could go on and on, but we won’t spoil it all for you! There really isn’t a better way to fall in love with Lisbon than exploring it with your significant other by your side.

Best Things To Do in Lisbon: 2-Day Itinerary

You really can’t beat getting romantic travel recommendations from people with first-hand experience! Our 2 day Lisbon itinerary was filled to the brim with all sorts of exciting and romantic activities.

Here, we’ll share our favorites and some other suggestions we couldn’t fit in if they spark your interest.

Day 1 – Enjoy a Day Tour, Wine Tasting, & Cooking Class

Set Off on a Day Tour

Kickstart your first day by booking a day tour! It’s the best way to fully appreciate all that Lisbon has to offer, from uncovering its ancient history to visiting the most beautiful places in the heart of the city.

Plenty of different tours are available, but we particularly recommend booking a private tour through Viator. That way, you can get the scoop on the local history but tailored to your and your partner’s interests.

We did the Private Lisbon Tour with Premium Portuguese Wine and Tapas Tasting with Pedro, which was such a blast! This 4-hour tour will take you off the beaten path and see the city through the eyes of a local. You’ll meander through charming, rustic neighborhoods like Chiado, Bairro, and others and taste authentic wines and tapas along the way.

My partner and I really wanted to cover all the historical, cultural, and gastronomical highlights in the heart of the city. One of them is the Livraria Bertrand, the world’s oldest operating bookstore (it was founded in 1732!). If you make a purchase, have them stamp the inside of your book for a fun memento.

Insider tip: We recommend booking a private tour that is at least 2 hours long so you have enough time to explore and ask all your burning questions.

Hankering for a Sandwich?

Make your way over to La Piadina. This chain is known for its tasty piadinas (a type of Italian flatbread sandwich) filled with fresh, quality ingredients. It’s the perfect quick lunch stop while exploring the city or an evening snack before heading back to your hotel!

Visit a Local Winery

After your day tour, sit back and relax at a local winery. Just like the Douro Valley, it would be a crime to humanity if you miss out on a wine tasting while in Lisbon. The city has many wine bars where you can try a variety of wines paired with some delightful tapas.

Our favorite spot, without a doubt, was Lisbon Winery. What they have in knowledge and experience makes up for their unimaginative name (haha). But I mean, it is the most famous place for wine tastings in Lisbon, so it makes sense.

During our tasting, we got the charcuterie board and tasted two white wines: the Portal de Fidalgo Alvarinho and Chão da Quinta. We also tried two reds, the Gravuras do Côa and Monte dos Perdigões and a port, the Dalva 10-year Tawny. All of them were amazing! Even if you’re not a big fan of wines, this activity is worth it just for the cozy atmosphere and delicious tapas.

Insider tip: Make sure you try the milk cheese from the Azores. It’s to die for! We couldn’t get enough.

Take a Cooking Class

When it’s time for dinner, why not make it immersive with a cooking class? There’s so much to learn and experience when it comes to Portuguese culture. Lisbon itself is a hub of refined cuisine, from traditional dishes to contemporary fusion.

We had such a unique experience at Home Cooking Lisbon. We took the Traditional Portuguese Cooking Class (of course) and made a 4-course meal, which was super fun and a wonderful way to understand and appreciate the culture.

During the 3-hour class, you’ll be served tasty finger foods and beverages like local wines and beers. The menu changes seasonally, so you’ll enjoy the freshest ingredients. It’ll be a trip highlight for sure!

Insider tip: We chose the Home Cooking Lisbon class because of its small group size (maximum 10 people) and hands-on approach. It totally beats a crowded cooking class with 30 other people, where you might not even get a chance to touch the ingredients!

Where to stay In Lisbon

Hotel recommendation

Áurea Museum

A hotel with a museum built in? Yes, please. Resting along the banks of the Tagus River, this unique hotel offers guests the opportunity to stay in a 16th-century building featuring a museum, spa, restaurant, and bar.

The Áurea Museum features a collection of Portuguese and international contemporary art, as well as an archaeological exhibition that guides you through different eras of Lisbon’s history. As a guest, you can take a free mini-tour of the hotel’s archaeological remains to get a glimpse of the city’s past. Don’t skip this, it’s epic.

During our stay, we found the large ships docking at the port nearby a little distracting, but it was still a peaceful and welcoming environment. The rooms are spacious and beautifully decorated, with modern amenities that complement the historical architecture.

We loved the sauna and pool area and found it completely unused by anyone else the few times we visited.

Day 2 – Explore Neighborhoods, Try Tile Painting, & Have a Romantic Date Night

Explore Historic Neighborhoods

Lisbon is a large and diverse city with many distinct neighborhoods to explore. While you likely won’t be able to fit it all in two days, we recommend visiting at least one that catches your interest on Day 2.

Here are the areas that stood out to us the most:

Lisbon, Portugal - July 23, 2019: Diners at the Time Out Market, a popular foodie attraction in Lisbon, Portugal

Cais do Sodre

Right along the water, Cais do Sodre is known for its buzzing nightlife and a wide array of dining options. Its starring attraction, the Time Out Market, is at its center.

Also known as Mercado da Ribeira, the Time Out Market was insanely crowded and definitely an Instagram-worthy spot. It wasn’t our thing (read: insanely crowded), but if you’re into touristy food courts, it’s probably worth a visit.

When we were there, we tried a sample platter from Chef Marlene Vieira and LOVED the cured egg from Recordação de Sintra. We also recommend the eclairs from L’Éclair, cured meats from Manteigaria Silva, and sardines from Conserveira de Lisboa.

This area of the city is also a great place to hear traditional fado music. It is typically sung in small bars and restaurants, but you’ll likely hear it reverberate through the streets as well.

Graça

For a more local atmosphere, Graça is a great pick. It’s uphill from the city center, providing gorgeous views of Lisbon and the river. The Miradouro da Graça viewpoint offers a stunning panoramic view and is one of our favorite spots in the city.

While you’re here, you’ll also need to check out the Vila Berta and Estrela d’Ouro villas, filled with quaint streets and traditional Portuguese homes. We loved spending our time wandering through the narrow streets and admiring the colorful murals and tiles adorning many of the buildings.

As you take a romantic stroll through this neighborhood, you will find many cozy wine bars, gardens, and trendy shops to explore. We also recommend visiting the Igreja da Graça, a beautiful church with intricate blue and white tiles inside.

Try a Tile Painting Workshop

After wandering your Lisbon neighborhood of choice, get creative with some tile painting! Old Lisbon is painted with color thanks to the beautiful tiles that adorn buildings and streets across the city.

We were so bummed we couldn’t attend one of these classes, as we ran out of time. But if you’re keen on getting crafty, I’m sure you’ll love it! We were really interested in Estudio Lazuli‘s two-hour Hispanic Moorish Tile Workshop

Located near the Sintra train station, this awesome class will have you creating 3D Moorish clay tile in the traditional “Aresta” style. You’ll make the mold and then paint a dry one with colorful glazes. The class is 2 hours long, and you can get the tiles shipped to your home address. Talk about the best souvenirs ever!

Have a Romantic Date Night

End your romantic stay in Lisbon with a memorable night out on the town with your beloved. Whether you’re into live music, rooftop bars, or fine dining, Lisbon has a variety of options. Here are the best restaurants, bars, and eateries we visited for a truly unforgettable evening.

  • Porter Bistrô: This Italian restaurant can be found right off the main strip in Lisbon. It’s part of the Corpo Santo Hotel, so it’s perfect for a romantic dinner after a day of sightseeing. Make sure to try their homemade pasta and desserts!
  • Restaurante Pabe: A dark and moody white tablecloth restaurant, Pabe serves up some of the best tableside service and Portuguese cuisine in Lisbon. We loved the old-school vibe and the attentive staff. Try the Steak Tartare du Maître — it was incredible!
  • Zaika: The Taste of India: If you’re ready to eat something that isn’t salt cod (trust me, you will at some point), Zaika is an epic little Indian restaurant for cleansing the palate with lots of exciting flavors.
  • La Romana: Literally the best gelato you’ll find in Lisbon. With over 60 flavors to choose from, including vegan and dairy-free options, you’ll be sure to satisfy your sweet cravings. We stopped here twice it was that good.
  • The One Palácio da Anunciada: If you’re going to stop for a cocktail, make it here! This 16th-century palace-turned-luxury hotel has a stunning rooftop bar with panoramic views of the city. Enjoy a refreshing drink while taking in the sights of Lisbon; it’s an experience you won’t forget!

What to Pack for a Trip to Lisbon

  • Comfortable walking shoes: Lisbon is a very hilly city, so make sure to pack comfortable shoes to explore all the different neighborhoods and attractions.
  • Sun protection: As Lisbon has a Mediterranean climate, it can get quite hot and sunny. Make sure to pack sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat to protect yourself from the sun.
  • Light layers: The weather in Lisbon can be unpredictable, so it’s best to pack light layers that you can easily put on or take off depending on the temperature.
  • Adapters and converters: Portugal uses Type F electrical outlets, so make sure to pack adapters and converters if necessary.
  • Cash and credit cards: While most places in Lisbon accept credit cards, it’s always a good idea to have some cash on hand for smaller purchases or places that don’t accept cards.

Lisbon FAQs

What is the best month to visit Lisbon, Portugal?

We really liked visiting Lisbon in the summer. From May to September, the weather is warm and pleasant, perfect for exploring the city on foot. Late spring is another good time to visit, as the temperatures are mild and there are fewer tourists.

What month is the cheapest in Lisbon?

The best time to visit Lisbon on a tighter budget is from November to March or March to May. During these months, accommodation prices tend to be lower, and there are fewer crowds. Keep in mind that the weather may be cooler, and some attractions may have reduced operating hours.

Is Lisbon expensive as a tourist?

This really depends on your budget and travel style. Lisbon can be relatively affordable for budget travelers, with cheap accommodation options and reasonably priced food. However, there are also plenty of luxury accommodations and high-end restaurants that can add up quickly.

We recommend doing some research and budgeting accordingly to make the most of your trip. But as a good rule of thumb, 60-80 euros per day should cover accommodation, food, and some activities.

Is Lisbon walkable?

Absolutely! Lisbon is a very walkable city, with plenty of charming streets and neighborhoods to explore on foot. Just note that the city is quite hilly, so be prepared for some uphill walking. You can also take advantage of Lisbon’s public transportation system, including trams, buses, and the metro, to get around quickly and easily.

Do I need cash for Lisbon?

Most places in Lisbon will accept credit or debit cards, but it’s always a good idea to have some cash on hand for small purchases or in case of emergency.

ATMs are widely available throughout the city, and you can also exchange money at banks and currency exchange offices if needed. Just be aware that some smaller shops and restaurants may only accept cash, so it’s best to have a mix of both.
