The Malibu Lagoon State Beach is probably one of the most popular beaches (read: crowded) to visit because it offers a variety of things to explore and see.
You have the famous Malibu Pier, where you can enjoy a nice dinner, do some fishing, walk the trails, or do some bird watching. Take a stroll on the pier at night, holding hands while the area is lit up with lights as you feel the breeze coming off the sea, and then sit down for a quiet and romantic meal together.
Those looking to learn a little more about the history of the area can take a trip through the historic Adamson House and the Malibu Lagoon Museum. The Adamson House is a Spanish Colonial Revival home that has some pretty cool historic artifacts from the area, including surviving pieces of decorative ceramic tiles.
You can then make your way to the Malibu Lagoon Museum and take a tour and learn more about the Chumash tribe, the birth of surfing, and more.
Insider Tip: If you’re not into crowded beaches, try visiting Malibu Lagoon State Beach during the week or earlier in the day. It tends to get more crowded on the weekends and during peak hours.

2. Pirates Cove Beach
On the west side of Point Dume, you’ll find a hidden sandy beach called Pirates Cove Beach. The hidden cove is located at the southern end of Westward Beach and is behind a wall of boulders. Beach access can be kind of tricky, especially during high tide or rough waters, but there is a path behind the boulders that you can climb to get to the beach.
Getting to this hidden gem is a little adventure in itself, but it’s definitely worth the effort. The beach is secluded and serene, surrounded by beautiful cliffs and rock formations. After a day of relaxing on the beach, enjoy watching the beautiful sunset together.
This is a great area for whale and dolphin spotting. Harbor seals and sea lions have also been known to make an appearance. Just make sure to leave the beach as you found it, as it is a protected area and home to many wildlife species.
Insider Tip: Bring a picnic and some snacks, as there are no facilities or restaurants nearby. This will make for the most romantic meal on the beach while watching the sunset.

Insider Tip: If you’re looking for free parking, Westward Beach Road, just east of the entrance, has free street parking. Take Cliffside Drive down to Birdview Avenue. If it’s full, you’ll have to pay a fee at the Westward Beach lot.
